Connected – Maui Family Photographer

It’s hard to explain the connection I feel to my clients when I get done with a session. I don’t want to stop chatting, I want to go to dinner and learn all about them instead of just studying their connections from behind the lens. After this session I felt exactly the same way. I have been referring clients for several months now, but when I received Jeff’s email and saw his work, I was flattered that he wanted me to capture his family on their vacation. (And, apparently, I only have to be flattered to take a session:))

I recommended a beach that I use a lot and was flabbergasted when I arrived. The beach was covered in people and debris from recent bonfires. My jaw hit the sand for just a moment and I considered having them follow me to a nearby bay. I am pretty sure I rattled aloud all of our options while they stared at me and smiled politely. Sorry guys, I am not great at hiding my feelings. We decided to stay and I am so glad we did. It was a gorgeous night with gorgeous people and somehow we managed to stay out of the blackened wood piles, and holes in the sand (thanks, for saving me when I was walking backwards….that could have been disastrous).

Be sure to check out Jeff Seltzer Photography, if you are looking for anything other than photos of your children to fill your wall space…he has some gorgeous work.
xo, kellie

One Day – 10 on 10 March

If I could post more than 10 images, I could show you that girls can be just as crazy as boys.

I chose to show one from each hour that I liked…that made my house look semi-calm. Oh, the joy of motherhood, the hardest job I have ever had.

I am so thankful for my camera that helps me find the light and humor throughout my day.

If you want to see more of the 10 on 10 group that I am a part of, please go to Sara Tegman | St Loius, Missouri Family Photographer.

Few Favorites and teaching teenagers

Several weeks back a friend of mine asked if I would help start a Photography Club for the upper classmen at my daughter’s school (she goes to a pre-k through 12). Of course, being the crazy passionate person I am, I excitedly said “absolutely!” I hoped that just one student might catch the “photography bug” of seeing the world differently. It was only before our first class that I panicked and thought I was SO not qualified to stand in front of teenagers and teach them about exposure, light, lines, and perspective. Why would they trust me? And for some reason I thought if I showed them some of my work, it might prove to them my passion for the craft, and that I just might know what I am doing. I am not sure it proved anything to them, but I am having a ball teaching this group of bright students, who seem to be catching on at a lightening pace. Here is a short version of the group of work that I showed them.

CandaceFebruary 17, 2012 - 10:07 am

OMG- I saw me on there :) Very cool. I love your work Kellie! And how cool to share your passion with those students!

Ro roFebruary 17, 2012 - 10:20 am

SarahFebruary 17, 2012 - 10:30 am

SharonFebruary 22, 2012 - 12:58 am

Lucky students!

AnnieFebruary 29, 2012 - 11:38 am

Your images are amazing. Those teens are pretty lucky to learn from you. (You should show them the comments–how many of us would do anything to live close to you to learn from you! :)

Jerred ZegelisMarch 6, 2012 - 6:31 am

Awesome work. Those are truly moments that can never be re-created. I love your honesty that shows through so beautifully through your images – I’m sure the students loved it!

Jessica DeaneMarch 8, 2012 - 6:11 pm

This is me angry. I came here to get my Kellie fix… and then saw I totally missed a post from you! Here it is March.. and I’m just now seeing this! he he.

kristianne kochMarch 13, 2012 - 5:06 am

Every time I check in to see what you are up to I am so rejuvenated and comforted by your work. Your eye for the important things in life is more intuitive than most. I love, love your photographs!! You are more than qualified to share your passion and insights with those kids. Wow! They are so fortunate and what a rewarding experience for you!

SherylMarch 25, 2012 - 6:30 am

These photos are stunning. Thanks for sharing!

CathleenApril 18, 2012 - 3:52 pm

I have been an admirer of your work since I found it through Molly Flanagan and the 10 on 10′s!

What lucky kids your students are! Here are some words I think would be perfect for teaching anyone “the art of seeing”.

I got turned on to photography in my Junior year of High School and it changed my life. I know your students will be inspired by these words because your work seems to reflect this…so keep going and don’t stop!

Here are the words:

“What defines extraordinary? What should it describe? The elite? The astounding? What about the ordinary? The mundane and common? What about all the parts of our world that fall in between the extremes?

Could extraordinary be defined by them? Of course. You see, the ordinary is the part of our world that is somehow the most extraordinary. It’s the part of our world where beauty is interlaced into each detail.

And character is found in every nook and every cranny. It’s the part of our world that can knock our socks off. Leave us with tears in our eyes. It’s the part of our world that can change minds and influence world leaders. It’s the part that’s common to us all. It’s there for us. It’s all there every day for every one of us. But we walk by it. So many of us just walk by every day. Never knowing and never caring.

But some do. Some see the detail and the beauty . The character and the harmony. They see every perfection and imperfection. They see the sum of the parts and they see it become greater than the whole. They see everything. Everything become beautiful. Everything become- extraordinary.

Show someone. Show someone first the ordinary, and then show them the extraordinary and see if either one of you can tell the difference.”

10 on 10 – One day in February. Yesterday, Actually

Talk about waiting until the last minute this month.  When this posts, I will have finished my last shot only 6 hours earlier.  It was a day of errands and not very much “seeing” or creativity. Each month I think I will be more creative the next time, and each month, I hastily shoot and post. Being that it is only February, I think I will make a resolution to plan my 10 on 10, how’s that for a resolution?  For those of you new to my blog, a 10 on 10, created by the great Shannon Harrison, is 10 images of our everyday lives posted on the 10th of each month.  Here are my 10, posted in haste.

Mama’s new shoes in which she can’t walk
Caught in the garage
To the other side
Costco
Swimming lessons
Groceries
Quick headstand
Before clean-up

Now head over and visit the uber duber talented Kristy Lane | DFW | Lifestyle Photographer who is also participating in the 10 on 10 project.

10 on 10 | Home for the holidays | Maui Family photographer

Writing is stressful to me. I have powerful emotions and can never articulate my thoughts in a way that is most melodramatic. So, until I can figure out how to express myself more appropriately, I have decided to write in short scraps from my brain. It is entirely relevant, because if you have met me, I don’t control my brain to mouth ratio very well. So, here are a few of my scraps.

Cold.
Watching my girls embrace Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins makes my tongue feel thick and my throat feel tight.
My heart feels warm.
Enjoying my Mom’s Christmas enthusiasm.
Fascinated by a fish that lives upside down when it has a full stomach.
Watching that fish die because it ate too much :-/
Playing with my old toys.
Rolling around in the snow.
Dancing with Papa.
My heart is full.
Excitement.
Magic.

Enjoy my 10 photos (okay 15) on the 10th that I am doing with many talented photographers. You can see more talent here with Kristin M. Young | Gainesville, Central Florida Photographer.

a hawaiian evening – maui family photographer

It doesn’t get better than a shave ice and the beach, especially for a couple toddlers. This little family just moved from Seattle back to the Mom’s home in Hawaii.  Their 3 year old daughter announced “my heart feels good in Hawaii” shortly after their move across the Pacific Ocean.

I could feel their warmth and love for each other as soon as I met them. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and felt I had new friends at the end of our session.  Thank you! xx,

kellie

The tazmanian devil turns 3 | Maui Family Photographer

she melts my heart and makes me crazy every single day.
she runs or skips everywhere she goes.
she shakes when she’s mad.
she screams when she’s exicted.
she starts at least one sentence a day with “when i was a boy…”
she thinks she can’t swim without her goggles.
she can’t say her “r”‘s and has a lisp.
she turns a rooms upside down in no more than 3 seconds.

my heart swells when she puts her arms around me, sometimes i can’t get my breath and a tear comes to my eye. i’m crazy in love with her.

i don’t want her to be 3.

AnikaOctober 30, 2011 - 10:45 am

Don’t you just love how contently exhausted they are at the end of exciting days?
But I hear ya, I don’t want my baby to turn 3 either. Next year ;)

Alia RolleyOctober 30, 2011 - 3:20 pm

Love what you wrote and of course love the pics. 3 is even better than 2 though! Every year keeps getting better.

Ruby is 5 for – 10 on 10 – Maui Family Photographer

This month I joined a group of photographers in a project called 10 on 10. The idea is to take 10 (or so) photos one day during the month and post them on the 10th of each month.

I decided it would be a perfect opportunity to capture my Ruby’s 5th birthday.

I am not quite sure how this happened. Me, having a 5 year old. I love her so much. Especially when she is sleeping. I know that sounds horrible, but when I stare at her tiny body, deep in slumber….not moving, I see her new freckles and her hair she twisted into a knot just before she nodded off…and, she’s not moving. I think of all the funny things she told me that day and how she can’t stop skipping even when she knows she’ll lose her slipper. I think of how she can’t help but swing her hips if there is music playing, and how she loves to sing herself to sleep. I smile thinking of how she introduced herself to her ballet class as “Ruby Do (pause) Ruby Dooby Do”. And, how she still gets so excited about balloons.

She is full of it…everything. Energy. Style. Attitude. Brains. And sometimes, even gratitude over the littlest things.

I love my Ruby Do.

Not shiny and new, but old and worn – Kellie Hatcher RAW Color Presets

A glorious thing happened after I launched my first set of presets. I was miraculously cured from only seeing things in black and white…most of this was probably due to the fact that while the presets were in the creating and testing process, I got sick of them. Really sick of them. After the first launch, I had an overwhelming response asking me to release a color set. Well, I didn’t have a color set. In fact, I completely hated my own color processing! But, since I still had sessions to edit and I couldn’t possibly present an entire disc to my clients with only black and white images, I was forced to create something that I loved. At the beginning of the summer, I started creating a new color preset for each session that I shot. Again, since I am moody, most of my presets add mood and depth, and a film like feeling. They are not shiny and new. They are old and worn, just like my favorite pair of slippahs (that’s Hawaiian for flip flops).

I hope you love them as much as I do.

xx, kellie

OK, I know this is a silly question, but I’m only familiar editing in CS4. I’ve opened images a few times in ACR (but they were shot in jpeg), but I’m not really comfortable with it. Would these actions not work in Photoshop? I’m TOTALLY in love with this look; it just blows me away. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Just wanted to see if there was a possibility that somehow they would work in CS4. Thank you so much, and beautiful job!!! :-)

in betweens – maui family photographer

i believe in what i do.

i believe that people need to remember these moments more than a perfect picture of them smiling. when i see a photograph of a family all smiling at the camera, it doesn’t prove to me they were happy in that moment. i am skeptical, i guess. i want to capture fleeting moments that you may not even remember having. the “in betweens” of your session. these are what make our lives unique. my good friend, molly flanagan, said this about my work…and i think she nailed what i have been trying to accomplish all along -

“it is awesome to go on vacation and have this incredible experience with your family. but to be able to come away with pictures that capture that delight is really incredible. you are not documenting the fun things they did on vacation, but recording how that time together makes their relationships stronger. not the specific memories, but the feeling of creating memories together.”

thank you, moll, that is exactly what i am trying to do.

and this family couldn’t have created memories in front of me any better. i love them. i immediately wanted to go home and have two more children.

and because that wasn’t really possible, i named a color preset for my upcoming set after them. nicoloff. used for this session.

AngelaSeptember 7, 2011 - 10:39 am

What fun, beautiful images. I adore the way you captured such fun moments and the love between them :)

ChristinaSeptember 7, 2011 - 10:43 am

These types of photos speak 1,000x more than the “perfect portrait”. These are wonderful and I can feel joy in them!

Rebecca KoegelSeptember 7, 2011 - 10:44 am

i CANNOT wait to come to maui next summer! i am totally hiring you to do a session with my family [aug 25-31...dont make plans :) ] we were just there last month, and i totally regretted not having a session, so i came home and started researching maui photogs…you were where i stopped looking :)

and can i just mention i am beyond ecstatic to hear you’re working on putting out some color presets!? which black and white did you use on these? i LOVE the soft chalky blacks!

Candace MendesSeptember 7, 2011 - 11:38 am

Jessica DeaneSeptember 7, 2011 - 11:44 am

SIGH. One. you make me love this family. two, you make want to move to maui. and three. I adore you.

Alia RolleySeptember 7, 2011 - 12:46 pm

The second sentence captures it. I love it! That is what I strive for as a photographer as they are the most genuine moments. In my (limited) experience, it is what people love the most! I love, love, love these shots. I’ll also be looking for nicoloff soon :)

NarrelleSeptember 7, 2011 - 12:48 pm

Ditto Rosina.
And I just have to add that with every new session you post I fall that little bit more in love with what you do. Your work is magical, but it can only be a reflection of who you are.
