We were at the mall trying to decide which direction to go. I had a fat baby on my hip and I had just given him his second bottle. This baby boy was NEVER fussy, just fat and happy, so when he wouldn’t stop crying I just assumed he was hungry. It was in the middle of our conversation when he did it…the projectile vomit across the mall’s tile floor. My mom and sister walked away like they didn’t even know me and left me there like a single “teen mom”. The only thing was, it wasn’t my baby. This was my nephew whom we cared for during his first few months of life. We had the privilege of cuddling this roly poly boy morning, noon and night until his parents were done working one summer. And now, he is a baby no more. In fact, at twelve he is almost a full head taller than I.
It was a special morning that I got to spend with him, his little brother (my other cute nephew with amazing eyes) and family last week….and I even took a little break from finding my light to eat a delicious breakfast. Thanks for the egg nog and a fun morning, enjoy!

love these captured moments!! and hope that when my kids get bigger, i might actually have a clean house??? maybe?????
wow kel. he will be SO happy to see this when he’s older! what a privilege to be an aunt! and i’d love to see you years ago, holding a fat baby on your lap at the mall.
Cute story…maybe because it seems like just yesterday my 14yr old son was that baby boy I was holding in the food court at the mall when the projectile vomit decided to make an appearance. Lovely pictures as always!
your are so creative with that camera of yours. on my 10th anniversary my whole family is coming to maui (that is where we had our honeymoon). I am booking you
Writing is stressful to me. I have powerful emotions and can never articulate my thoughts in a way that is most melodramatic. So, until I can figure out how to express myself more appropriately, I have decided to write in short scraps from my brain. It is entirely relevant, because if you have met me, I don’t control my brain to mouth ratio very well. So, here are a few of my scraps.
Cold.
Watching my girls embrace Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins makes my tongue feel thick and my throat feel tight.
My heart feels warm.
Enjoying my Mom’s Christmas enthusiasm.
Fascinated by a fish that lives upside down when it has a full stomach.
Watching that fish die because it ate too much :-/
Playing with my old toys.
Rolling around in the snow.
Dancing with Papa.
My heart is full.
Excitement.
Magic.
Enjoy my 10 photos (okay 15) on the 10th that I am doing with many talented photographers. You can see more talent here with Kristin M. Young | Gainesville, Central Florida Photographer.

It doesn’t get better than a shave ice and the beach, especially for a couple toddlers. This little family just moved from Seattle back to the Mom’s home in Hawaii. Their 3 year old daughter announced “my heart feels good in Hawaii” shortly after their move across the Pacific Ocean.
I could feel their warmth and love for each other as soon as I met them. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and felt I had new friends at the end of our session. Thank you! xx,
kellie

Hey, I know these guys!!! I’m so happy to see them again through your photos! The b/w of mom & dad is so perfect – love it!
On a side note, Hawaii sounds so good right now – it’s 39 degrees and raining in Seattle today.
I really really really want to move to Hawaii just so you can capture my family! jeez Kellie… u rock.

Such great shots. I love her bathing suit. What a cutie!
I’m in love! So Lahaina…love it! And what a gorgeous family!

she melts my heart and makes me crazy every single day.
she runs or skips everywhere she goes.
she shakes when she’s mad.
she screams when she’s exicted.
she starts at least one sentence a day with “when i was a boy…”
she thinks she can’t swim without her goggles.
she can’t say her “r”‘s and has a lisp.
she turns a rooms upside down in no more than 3 seconds.
my heart swells when she puts her arms around me, sometimes i can’t get my breath and a tear comes to my eye. i’m crazy in love with her.
i don’t want her to be 3.

Don’t you just love how contently exhausted they are at the end of exciting days?
But I hear ya, I don’t want my baby to turn 3 either. Next year
Love what you wrote and of course love the pics. 3 is even better than 2 though! Every year keeps getting better.
Happy birthday!
I so LOVE 3. For me it’s the perfect blend of baby & independence.
My heart swells when I read your post and your images of her melt my heart.
i’d be completely in love with her too. happy birthday!!
First off, I just adore your work. Lovely.
Second, I LOVE three. My son is about three and a half and I totally agree with Erika. If I could freeze him at this age right now I would. I think it’s my favorite. Then again, I pretty much say that about any age.
sighhhhhhhhhhhh. love. love. love.
This is the sweetest! We use to call Hailey the Tazmanian devil:) Happy Bday to your baby:)
What a beautiful set of images, I really love the feel and processing of the last one!
melt!!!
Love your words – I can totally picture her in action.
i am so late in replying to this, but i just wanted to say that i LOVE this post and i love her
reading the one about sentence starting with “When I was a boy” slayed me!
love your pictures–extensions of your heart, for sure.
adore every single one! happy 3 to your beautiful little girl!
these are ALL so perfect. that last one takes my breath away.

I decided it would be a perfect opportunity to capture my Ruby’s 5th birthday.
I am not quite sure how this happened. Me, having a 5 year old. I love her so much. Especially when she is sleeping. I know that sounds horrible, but when I stare at her tiny body, deep in slumber….not moving, I see her new freckles and her hair she twisted into a knot just before she nodded off…and, she’s not moving. I think of all the funny things she told me that day and how she can’t stop skipping even when she knows she’ll lose her slipper. I think of how she can’t help but swing her hips if there is music playing, and how she loves to sing herself to sleep. I smile thinking of how she introduced herself to her ballet class as “Ruby Do (pause) Ruby Dooby Do”. And, how she still gets so excited about balloons.
She is full of it…everything. Energy. Style. Attitude. Brains. And sometimes, even gratitude over the littlest things.
I love my Ruby Do.

Love the layout of this Kellie. Very very cool!
happy birthday Ruby! love all of these minus the blender blow up. lol. bummer. ps. I call shannon’s ruby…ruby doobie…as well. I mean how can you not?
Happy Birthday little girl! Your processing is scrumptious! That B&W of her is darling. What a great day.
Happy Birthday Ruby! I love getting a glimpse into Ruby’s world and all the things she adores. Those pink balloons — what a wonderful surprise to wake up to!
i must meet her. i must hug her. i was just telling my husband something similar about cogan… he can’t help but sing all.the.time. it is like all that life inside is wanting to burst out.
Oh Kellie, your Ruby. What a simply perfect day for a new 5 year old. Her art work makes me happy. Such a hallmark piece. Can’t stop staring at that milkshake shot and that BW.
love. happy 5th b-day to your sweet girl! love how you documented her special day!
she is so adorable kellie! and i can totally understand loving them so much when they’re sleeping ; )
Fun, fun, fun! And happy birthday to your girlie!! Love these bits and pieces…happy you have joined us!
Oh my heart! Ruby Do, Ruby Dooby Do? Sigh. She looks simply precious. My Nathan turns five at the end of the month and it is fun to see the differences between 5 year old girl and 5 year boy!
Oh goodness that has to be the cutest introduction I have ever heard! I love these images. I love the love you have for your Ruby Do. I’m not sure how it happens either, but I too have a 5 yr old.
i love these shots kellie. i love how the shots seem to be on her eye level, like you’re seeing it through her eyes. i’m not sure how you do the color and darkness so well, but you do and i love it.
Seriously. adore adore adore.
So happy that Molly shared your name on her blog! Now I have another amazing blog to enjoy
Cute post by the way. I love capturing those real moments with my kids. My daughter is 6 and my son is 4. Life is nothing short of busy-fun. Blessings to you <3
Wow! I love these! So great. Just when I think you can’t get any better…
A glorious thing happened after I launched my first set of presets. I was miraculously cured from only seeing things in black and white…most of this was probably due to the fact that while the presets were in the creating and testing process, I got sick of them. Really sick of them. After the first launch, I had an overwhelming response asking me to release a color set. Well, I didn’t have a color set. In fact, I completely hated my own color processing! But, since I still had sessions to edit and I couldn’t possibly present an entire disc to my clients with only black and white images, I was forced to create something that I loved. At the beginning of the summer, I started creating a new color preset for each session that I shot. Again, since I am moody, most of my presets add mood and depth, and a film like feeling. They are not shiny and new. They are old and worn, just like my favorite pair of slippahs (that’s Hawaiian for flip flops).
I hope you love them as much as I do.
xx, kellie

You have no idea how excited I am about this!!!! Yay! I have made a point to keep checking your site for color presets and today you just made my day! Thank you so much for sharing! Love all your work! Xoxo
OK, I know this is a silly question, but I’m only familiar editing in CS4. I’ve opened images a few times in ACR (but they were shot in jpeg), but I’m not really comfortable with it. Would these actions not work in Photoshop? I’m TOTALLY in love with this look; it just blows me away. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Just wanted to see if there was a possibility that somehow they would work in CS4. Thank you so much, and beautiful job!!!

I just got these presets yesterday and I LOVE them! Thank you so much!

i believe in what i do.
i believe that people need to remember these moments more than a perfect picture of them smiling. when i see a photograph of a family all smiling at the camera, it doesn’t prove to me they were happy in that moment. i am skeptical, i guess. i want to capture fleeting moments that you may not even remember having. the “in betweens” of your session. these are what make our lives unique. my good friend, molly flanagan, said this about my work…and i think she nailed what i have been trying to accomplish all along -
“it is awesome to go on vacation and have this incredible experience with your family. but to be able to come away with pictures that capture that delight is really incredible. you are not documenting the fun things they did on vacation, but recording how that time together makes their relationships stronger. not the specific memories, but the feeling of creating memories together.”
thank you, moll, that is exactly what i am trying to do.
and this family couldn’t have created memories in front of me any better. i love them. i immediately wanted to go home and have two more children.
and because that wasn’t really possible, i named a color preset for my upcoming set after them. nicoloff. used for this session.

What fun, beautiful images. I adore the way you captured such fun moments and the love between them
These types of photos speak 1,000x more than the “perfect portrait”. These are wonderful and I can feel joy in them!
I was sucked into the emotions of these photos! Gorgeous session, esp. loved the last one!
Kel, this is definitely one of my favorite sessions of yours…if not THE favorite. I just love all the connection you caught, and what.gorgeous.images!!!!!
so beautiful, kellie. i don’t really even see sessions when i look at your family photographs. i see families. love. happiness. joy. connections. you capture the REAL so very very well.
Love your style Kellie! That last shot is perfection!
i CANNOT wait to come to maui next summer! i am totally hiring you to do a session with my family [aug 25-31...dont make plans
] we were just there last month, and i totally regretted not having a session, so i came home and started researching maui photogs…you were where i stopped looking
and can i just mention i am beyond ecstatic to hear you’re working on putting out some color presets!? which black and white did you use on these? i LOVE the soft chalky blacks!
These are AMAZING Kellie! She is an OC photographer that I admire…..love how you captured their family! Can’t wait till my boys are a little bigger and we come back to Maui….and can’t wait to do another session with you!
Fantastic. You did a great job at highlighting the love this family has for each other.
SIGH. One. you make me love this family. two, you make want to move to maui. and three. I adore you.
The second sentence captures it. I love it! That is what I strive for as a photographer as they are the most genuine moments. In my (limited) experience, it is what people love the most! I love, love, love these shots. I’ll also be looking for nicoloff soon
Ditto Rosina.
And I just have to add that with every new session you post I fall that little bit more in love with what you do. Your work is magical, but it can only be a reflection of who you are.
xx
Kellie…no words can express how I feel about these images..I know I already said this to you but…you gave me more than photographs…you gave my family a priceless gift! They are truly more beautiful than I EVER imagined….I love every single image! YOU my friend have a special gift..and I am so thankful to have found you:) Thank you again!!!! I cannot wait to see the rest!
this post has sucked me in. love. maybe even in love.
kellie, these shots are fabulous. truly. you do so much more than capture an image. you capture their essence. that is a gift, my friend. xo
p.s. I forget to say…your friend described what YOU DO perfectly
When I look at these images…they bring out so many emotions and they make me so happy:) I know my husband loves me…but with these images..I can see the love…and that warms my heart sooo much:) I could go on and on….sooooooo thank you again:) Also, I am getting LR…I love your processing so much that I need to have your presets…and especially now that they will be named after us:) xoxoxo

this day she cried for almost 45 minutes, and now, i can’t even remember why.

I swear PMS starts at 2. lovin’ the colors and moodiness– see your presets add emotion!
ahhh…i’m so glad to know i’m not the only one who has a child who will cry for long lengths of time for who knows why. lol and now you’ve just reminded me how important it is to capture those moments too…these moments fade too quickly. these photos are simply perfect to me! i absolutely adore them! xoxo
happenstance right? my kids look at me like im crazy when i shoot them when theyre crying. its too beautiful to pass up.
I look at these in amazement. How could a little girl on the floor be so perfect?! Yet it is. When I look at your images…..I feel. I’m not sure how else to put it. They heighten the senses, they intensify feelings. Wow.

i adore them all. they’re spectacular. i know you enjoy posting your work shots (which are fantastic as well) but there is a sparkle in these ‘ordinary’ shots of your daily life, that i simply love. absolutely magnificent.
p.s. i’m still waiting on that color set for lightroom (wink, wink). . .
Love the light, love the grain, love the documentation!
how on EARTH did i miss these??? from now on, if i do not acknowledge one of your blog posts, please tell me! it would never be intentional. if our kids never meet, i will cry. i love all of these!!!
these are all extraordinary if you ask me! LOVE them all, adore the shot of the little girls on the bench in tutu’s!! and LOVE the processing in that last shot! your colour set will be nothing short of amazing no doubt!!
Your style and talent is amazing! I simply love these. Each and every one of them. There is no other way to put it. LOVE.
I have had this post sitting on my computer for two days. Trying to figure out how to explain what is so special about this little family simply could not be put into words. They showed up a little nervous as most my clients do – not knowing what to do with a camera pointed in their faces. They were dressed in the normal clothes they would throw on to go to the beach, not trying to be anyone but themselves. Capturing the funny, quirky personalities of their children and their beautiful, real interactions was easy. It was my dream session. A family not trying to look or be perfect. It rained on us. Hard. And everyone just laughed and the sun came out and I got to capture some gorgeous light falling on their laughter. Thank you, for letting me share these moments with you! Can’t wait to see you again. xx.

I am so in love with every image! Just found your blog I am so glad I did you are fantastic. I love the connection and joy in these images
just adorable and wonderful and lovely!! great job & great emotion!
I promise you I have not been hiring models for sessions! The people that hire me have just been THAT gorgeous, and this family was no exception. By the end of the session, I also knew what beautiful people they were on the inside, too.
Candace, of Candace Rock Photography, contacted me only a week before their scheduled trip. After hearing the reason she was coming (and that she was a fellow photographer), I couldn’t help but squeeze in a session for this beautiful family. You see, Candice’s Dad died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack only 7 months ago. Her parents loved to travel to Maui and have been coming here for several years. This time they came to remember him and make new memories. Although, he’s not in the photos, the forecast called for rain all week and Candace mentioned her Dad had brought the sun… because this gorgeous session was surrounded with a blanket of light. I hope you can feel it, Candace! xx, kellie

just fabulous!!! what a gorgeous reminder of a beautiful time spent remembering their dad. you captured these moments perfectly, kellie.
Just lovely.
The shot of her staring deep into the camera & the swinging babe are why cameras were created and why you must glue one to your hands.
Great tribute and session.
Gosh, I ADORE these! Love every one~you are SOOOOO good. Just couldn’t leave this post without commenting. Wow.
Kelly, WOW! from a fellow photographer here in Australia, your work is truly something to aispire to! You capture soo much heart soul love and truth!
Hope one day you can visit our shores! I will be visiting soon, I will make sure I’ll look out for your work!!
This was such a fun night with a beautiful family! They had their first trip traveling with the kiddos to visit our beautiful island….the kids LOVED the beach. This was only their 2nd night here and even with the time change the kids were super troopers in front of the camera. I loved them and decided that their mom and I would be great friends if she lived on Maui. Thank you for letting me capture a piece of your vacation. I hope this helps you remember it always. xx!

If I ever came to Maui on holidays, I’d book you in Kellie! <3
these are just gorgeous, kellie! and i agree with Sandra…i’m booking you if i’m ever there again. xoxo
Simply beautiful. Love each and every one of them.
Love them. . .and I’m talking not only about the pictures but the family pictured! After all, they are all mine. Kellie – I know I’ve already told you a bazillion times over, but you are amazing. Thank you for capturing our family in Maui! I used to say, IF we came back, I’d book you again, but now I’m saying WHEN we come back. . .
these make me want to move to maui.
Brilliant set. How do you get the images next to each other with different apertures?
When I look back at old photographs of my family, the ones that I can’t stop looking at are the ones that tell a story. The ones where my siblings and I were sprawled out across the floor on a Saturday morning. The ones where we are sitting at the dinner table with all of our new tupperware dishes. These are the photos that take me back to my childhood, help me remember, and make me smile. As a photographer in my own home, I feel the responsibility to capture this for my family…something they will have to look back on and remember.
This family that I shot on Saturday night is so dear to my heart. They will be leaving the island soon and I hope that they can look back on these and cherish their time in Maui.
Love you guys. I write this with tears in my eyes, as you have no idea how much you will be missed. You shine. I hope you love this visual story of your evening at the beach. xx!

We have so much of that same hair going on in our house right now! I always love seeing your girls. And I’m just so impressed that you threw a family shot in the mix. You get extra points for that.
Beautiful.
Those curls, toes and swing. String shot just so cool and playful. Love daddy brushing teeth.
So Kellie, I somehow found you on instagram (through keli?) and now I’m finding your blog. I’m really not a stalker
I am in love with your images. In love. So happy to find you here.
Kellie, beautiful shots! the toothbrush shot is also my favorite! were these processed with your presets? if so, which ones?
Thanks ladies!!
Daria, I think I used Milo (adjusted tone curve) Beauty and Dream. A handful of shots are presets that I haven’t released. Hope that helps!! Thank you!
Just stunning. I feel like I was actually there peeking in on your day. Thanks for that!

I adore the way you document life. Brilliant!
I’m very interested in your new presets, do you know whether you’ll release them? I love the color presets I bought from you, they totally fit my style <3
